  • Rapid Deployment and Support

Introduction:

In the ever-evolving landscape of energy management, the demand for innovative solutions continues to surge. This case study delves into the collaboration between a global leader in energy management and Blaze, a pioneering engineering firm, to address the challenges of miniaturization and cost-effectiveness in single-phase energy metering for residential markets.

Client Background:

The client, a renowned player in energy management, possessed a robust portfolio of energy meters tailored for commercial applications. However, their existing solution, while successful in commercial settings, faced significant obstacles when adapted for the residential market. The primary concerns revolved around size, cost, and complexity, hindering the client's aspirations for market expansion.

Challenges Faced:

  • Size Constraints: Residential panel boxes presented a compact environment, rendering the client's bulky metering solution impractical.

  • Cost Inefficiency: The existing solution comprised seven separate devices, resulting in high manufacturing costs and complexity.

  • Market Adaptation: Despite years of effort across multiple teams, the client struggled to streamline a residential energy metering solution that matched the efficiency and affordability of their commercial counterparts.

Blaze's Solution:

Blaze devised a comprehensive solution encompassing hardware, firmware, cloud integration, and mobile applications for both Android and iOS platforms.

Key features of Blaze's solution include:

  • Integration: Blaze condensed the entire metering solution into a single unit, eliminating the need for seven separate devices.

  • Miniaturization: By optimizing design and engineering processes, Blaze achieved a remarkable 1/4th reduction in footprint compared to the client's commercial solution.

  • Cost Efficiency: Blaze slashed manufacturing costs to less than 16% of the previous solution, making residential energy metering more accessible and affordable.

  • Technological Advancements: The inclusion of an in-built Wi-Fi gateway enabled seamless connectivity and data transmission, enhancing user experience and utility.

  • Rapid Deployment: Within a record span of six months, Blaze transformed the client's vision into a production-ready reality, ensuring swift market entry and scalability.

  • End-to-End Support: Beyond hardware development, Blaze handled firmware development, cloud platform integration, compliance, certification, and manufacturing as an EMS (Electronics Manufacturing Service), streamlining the entire process for the client.

Outcome:

Blaze's innovative solution has already made waves in the market, with successful deployment in one of the client's major markets. Plans for a global rollout are underway, poised to unlock new opportunities and redefine residential energy management on a global scale.

3. Accelerating Matter Adoption for a Global Technology Leader

m1.png

To illustrate how Blaze helps clients embrace Matter, consider a recent project where a leading global technology provider partnered with Blaze to develop a Matter-based smart home ecosystem under an aggressive timeline. The goal was to create a new smart home hub and companion devices that would support Matter from day one. In just 3 months, Blaze delivered a solution that included a Matter-enabled hub (supporting Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread), multiple device types (smart plugs, lights, switches, and sensors), as well as fully integrated apps and a cloud backend.

Challenge:

The client’s requirements were ambitious - the hub needed to not only handle Matter devices, but also bridge legacy Zigbee and Z-Wave accessories into the Matter network. Everything had to work locally and support multi-admin control, plus integrate with Apple, Google, and Amazon’s smart home platforms seamlessly (including voice control via Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant). Achieving all this from scratch within a quarter was a tall order.

Solution:

Blaze assembled a cross-functional team to tackle hardware, firmware, and software in parallel. We customized an existing hub hardware design to run the Matter stack alongside Zigbee/Z-Wave radios, effectively creating a multi-protocol bridge. Our firmware engineers implemented Matter over Thread and Matter over Wi-Fi on the hub, enabling it to speak to new Matter-compliant devices. At the same time, we modified the firmware of select sensor and control devices to support Matter natively (where hardware allowed), and tested interoperability with off-the-shelf Matter devices to ensure broad compatibility. On the software side, Blaze’s developers quickly stood up mobile apps that could commission and control devices across all these protocols, unifying the user experience. We also adjusted the cloud platform to support remote access and monitoring for the Matter devices. Throughout the process, rigorous testing and validation were performed - including multi-admin scenarios (controlling devices from both the client’s app and third-party platforms like Apple Home). Within the 3-month window, the client had a working Matter-based system - a testament to Blaze’s accelerator frameworks and expertise. The end result was a state-of-the-art smart home platform that is fully interoperable, voice-assistant friendly, and backward-compatible with the client’s legacy devices, all delivered in record time.

(This case underscores Blaze Automation’s ability to fast-track Matter integration, even for complex multi-protocol systems. By leveraging our off-the-shelf building blocks and deep knowledge of IoT standards, we helped the client leapfrog into the Matter era with a robust solution.)

Embracing the Future: Call to Action for OEMs and Partners
