- Case Study 3 | Blaze Automation
Blaze Automation offers comprehensive product engineering services including hardware, firmware, IoT integration, and cloud development. Our expertise spans from legacy device upgrades with Matter technology to custom solutions in cybersecurity, application development, and mechanical design for IoT products. Accelerating Matter Adoption for a Global Technology Leader To illustrate how Blaze helps clients embrace Matter, consider a recent project where a leading global technology provider partnered with Blaze to develop a Matter-based smart home ecosystem under an aggressive timeline. The goal was to create a new smart home hub and companion devices that would support Matter from day one. In just 3 months, Blaze delivered a solution that included a Matter-enabled hub (supporting Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread), multiple device types (smart plugs, lights, switches, and sensors), as well as fully integrated apps and a cloud backend. Challenge: The client’s requirements were ambitious - the hub needed to not only handle Matter devices, but also bridge legacy Zigbee and Z-Wave accessories into the Matter network. Everything had to work locally and support multi-admin control, plus integrate with Apple, Google, and Amazon’s smart home platforms seamlessly (including voice control via Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant). Achieving all this from scratch within a quarter was a tall order. Solution: Blaze assembled a cross-functional team to tackle hardware, firmware, and software in parallel. We customized an existing hub hardware design to run the Matter stack alongside Zigbee/Z-Wave radios, effectively creating a multi-protocol bridge. Our firmware engineers implemented Matter over Thread and Matter over Wi-Fi on the hub, enabling it to speak to new Matter-compliant devices. At the same time, we modified the firmware of select sensor and control devices to support Matter natively (where hardware allowed), and tested interoperability with off-the-shelf Matter devices to ensure broad compatibility. On the software side, Blaze’s developers quickly stood up mobile apps that could commission and control devices across all these protocols, unifying the user experience. We also adjusted the cloud platform to support remote access and monitoring for the Matter devices. Throughout the process, rigorous testing and validation were performed - including multi-admin scenarios (controlling devices from both the client’s app and third-party platforms like Apple Home). Within the 3-month window, the client had a working Matter-based system - a testament to Blaze’s accelerator frameworks and expertise. The end result was a state-of-the-art smart home platform that is fully interoperable, voice-assistant friendly, and backward-compatible with the client’s legacy devices, all delivered in record time. (This case underscores Blaze Automation’s ability to fast-track Matter integration, even for complex multi-protocol systems. By leveraging our off-the-shelf building blocks and deep knowledge of IoT standards, we helped the client leapfrog into the Matter era with a robust solution.) Embracing the Future: Call to Action for OEMs and Partners Matter is not just a buzzword - it’s becoming the foundation of the smart home and IoT ecosystem moving forward. Companies that adopt Matter now position themselves as forward-thinking and customer-centric, offering products that just work in any setting with top-notch security and user experience. The transition, however, can be challenging without the right expertise. This is where Blaze Automation comes in . If you’re an OEM, device manufacturer, or IoT platform provider looking to enable Matter in your products, now is the time to act. Blaze’s ADR with Wi-SUN + Wi-Fi-based Smart Controls The Wi-Fi + Wi-SUN hybrid solution offers the best of both worlds. Devices communicate with the utility through both Wi-Fi and Wi-SUN, eliminating uncertainties caused by end users’ Wi-Fi connectivity issues and enabling more accurate, large-scale Demand Response operations. The Wi-SUN gateway infrastructure (Head End System/HES), typically deployed for households, connects to the utility’s cloud over a 4G/5G network. It ensures highly reliable connectivity, precise demand monitoring, and robust ADR implementation. If the utility already has existing Wi-SUN Head End Systems deployed for collecting data from smart energy meters, our solution can seamlessly integrate with them through APIs, eliminating the need for any additional infrastructure installation. Edge Intelligence with Powerful Connectivity Machine learning on user patterns Automated Setpoint tracking Built-in ASHRAE 55 Thermal Comfort model Maintains comfort even during ADR Local fail-safe processing 4G Enabled with Wi-Fi fallback Key Components Software Components Dashboard Live Demand Response Control with Real-Time Participation Metrics The dashboard empowers utilities and energy managers to activate, monitor, and evaluate Demand Response events in real time. It offers visibility into total live consumption, consumer participation, expected load reduction, and post-event analytics. With actionable insights and granular control, it enables efficient grid load balancing while enhancing consumer engagement and consent-driven participation. Key Capabilities Centralised Utility Platform for managing ADR schedules. Provides system Health Monitoring, Analytics, and Remote Control. Enables Utilities to visualise demand trends and generate Actionable Reports. Enables utilities to track customer engagement and program effectiveness. Load Shedding Range: The possible load shedding value depends on multiple factors, including the relay cutoff power value and the set point of relay-connected ACs. For example, if the AC set point is 25 °C and the room temperature is 18 °C at the start of an ADR event, the temperature will adjust from 18 °C to 25 °C, resulting in energy savings. However, if the temperature is already 26 °C , no change occurs since lowering it would increase power usage. This variation is why a range of 10 - 15% is presented for the AC cutoff. ADR Insights: This feature gives utilities a clear, month-wise view of ADR performance, showing total power reduced, number of events, and cumulative ADR duration. It provides detailed, event-level visibility into how and why each ADR event was triggered, device participation success, and load-type impact. With exportable reports, utilities can confidently track performance, optimise strategies, and demonstrate measurable ADR outcomes over time.
