The basic form of a security system starts with a control panel operated by a keypad / remote key fob, usually located in a closet or basement and various sensors connected to the Control Panel from locations throughout the home. The Control panel can be called as the brain of the Security System and operates as central computer.
Depending on the application, the alarm output may be local or remote or a combination.

The local alarm systems sound sirens and / or alarms to alert nearby residents or people about intrusion. While remote alarm systems send a message to monitoring service which then calls the owner and / or Police department through public communication systems. Tips for Selection: 

Battery Backup: Make sure that the Security Alarm System that you are planning to buy has built-in battery backup for at least four hours if you are residing in a city and at least 10 hours if you are a resident of a town / village.
Auto dialing facility with redundant communication mechanism: Fix the system that has autodialing facility for at least five configured phone numbers. Also make sure that it has redundant dialing medium in case of failure of one medium. For example if the intruder cuts your telephone line the message has to be intimated to you  or concerned authorities through GSM dialer. Also SMS-based messaging on top of all these is very much advisable.

Radio Frequency range of operation (In case of wireless systems): Most of the low-cost security alarm systems will have a defect that the sensors will not be able to detect and trigger the Central Unit even if there is any intrusion. This is because of the poor radio frequency power emitted by the sensors. Properly test any security system before installation for the range of operation of sensors in the real installation site. 

Maintainability and Reliability: Make sure that even if you loose your keypad or remote key fob you should be able to kick start using a new remote / keypad without actually changing the entire alarm system. This should be applicable for various sensors that are integrated with this. Also ensure that proper testing of the system is already done by  some certifying agency for reliable working of the system, if not you may end up your day in rushing to home  for all the false triggers that it gives. 

Built –in Self Test and Self Healing Facility: In some of the instances even the best quality equipment will suddenly stop receiving triggers from the sensors because the system might hang. So, make sure that your equipment has inbuilt Watch Dog Timers to get rid of such unexpected hangs.
